Munich Restaurant Trends: July 2026
Seven of Munich's ten top-ranked restaurants from June didn't make it through July. A burger bar in Haidhausen held the number one spot for a second consecutive month. And a Korean BBQ spot with fewer than 100 reviews found itself ranked fourth in a city of over a million people. July was a month of dramatic movement — and our daily tracking captured every step of it.
The Top 10 Shakeup
From June 30 to July 31, only three venues carried their top-10 position into the new month: Last Call NYC (held #1), Sushi Tomo Oberanger (held #3), and Lacodo (slipped from #7 to #9). The other seven spots belonged to entirely new names.
| Rank | Restaurant | SBS | Reviews | District |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| #1 | Last Call NYC 2nd month | 100.0 | 225 · ⭐4.9 | Haidhausen |
| #2 | Sushi Tomo Oberanger held | 73.0 | 513 · ⭐4.7 | Altstadt |
| #3 | Milos Munich NEW | 66.8 | 156 · ⭐4.9 | Sendling |
| #4 | VIERUNDDREI NEW | 63.0 | 97 · ⭐4.7 | Schwabing |
| #5 | The Xofa NEW | 56.6 | 147 · ⭐4.8 | Haidhausen |
| #6 | Lacodo held | 40.1 | 259 · ⭐4.8 | Schwabing |
| #7 | Akimy NEW | 39.5 | 654 · ⭐4.7 | Glockenbachviertel |
| #8 | 794 JIDAI NEW | 38.9 | 129 · ⭐4.8 | Maxvorstadt |
| #9 | MAUI NEW | 37.2 | 916 · ⭐4.8 | Maxvorstadt |
| #10 | La Mocca NEW | 30.0 | 85 · ⭐4.9 | Neuperlach |
Asian cuisine now claims seven of the top ten positions — Japanese (Sushi Tomo, Lacodo, 794 JIDAI), Korean (VIERUNDDREI, The Xofa), Asian fusion (MAUI), and vegan-Asian (Akimy). Munich's top of table is being reshaped by international dining at an accelerating pace.
Biggest Climbers of the Month
Five restaurants moved more than 115 positions between June 30 and July 31. Three of the top five risers are European cuisine — a contrast to the Asian-dominated top 10:
| Restaurant | Movement | From → To | Category | District |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Yuki Sushi & Bowl | +261 | #286 → #25 | Japanese | Schwanthalerhöhe |
| Wirtshaus Rechthaler Hof | +228 | #275 → #47 | German | Maxvorstadt |
| Tavernetta | +209 | #267 → #58 | Italian | Schwabing |
| Osteria il tenore | +181 | #245 → #64 | Italian | Altstadt |
| LA-FAYETTE Restaurant und Bar | +116 | #135 → #19 | Mediterranean | Altstadt |
Yuki Sushi & Bowl posted the single biggest monthly jump we have recorded: 261 places in 31 days, landing at #25 from effectively off the radar at #286. Wirtshaus Rechthaler Hof and Tavernetta both broke into the top 60 — one a traditional German house, one an Italian neighbourhood trattoria in Schwabing.
The Biggest Fall of the Month
Fat Monk - Stachus entered July at #5 — a top-five Munich restaurant by our measure. It ended July at #309. That's a 304-position drop in a single month.
| Restaurant | Movement | From → To | Category |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fat Monk - Stachus | −304 | #5 → #309 | Deli / Bowls |
| Der Spöckmeier | −219 | #30 → #249 | German Wirtshaus |
| MOSTROS | −194 | #112 → #306 | Latin American |
| MIVU - Asian Kitchen & Bar | −172 | #51 → #223 | Asian |
| Madam Anna Ekke | −170 | #127 → #297 | Café / Brunch |
Fat Monk's collapse is the clearest example of what the Social Buzz Score actually measures. A restaurant that receives a spike of attention in one month — from press, an opening event, or social media — will often score exceptionally well in that window. When the spike fades and review growth returns to baseline, the score corrects. That correction is the signal, not a failure.
MOSTROS presents a more nuanced case: it received two Mit Vergnügen features in July, yet still fell 194 places. Press coverage alone doesn't sustain a ranking position — it needs to convert into continued review momentum to move the needle.
The Summer Volume Effect
Munich's beer gardens and Bavarian institutions absorbed most of the raw review volume in July — the tourist season is unmistakeable in the data:
| Restaurant | New Reviews in July | Category |
|---|---|---|
| Hofbräuhaus München | +899 | Bavarian |
| Giorgia Trattoria | +304 | Italian |
| Augustiner-Keller | +303 | Bavarian |
| Biergarten am Chinesischen Turm | +217 | Beer Garden |
| Wildmosers Restaurant am Marienplatz | +201 | German |
| Augustiner Klosterwirt | +166 | Bavarian |
| Madam Chutney | +149 | Indian |
None of these venues appear in the top 10. High volume and high momentum are different things. Augustiner-Keller (+303) is a particularly interesting data point — the landmark Maxvorstadt venue recently reopened and is absorbing a backlog of pent-up visitor interest. Madam Chutney's +149 reviews came alongside a Mit Vergnügen feature in July, and the restaurant moved up significantly in the overall ranking as a result.
Hidden Gems: Munich's Best-Kept Secrets
Seven of the top 50 Munich restaurants have fewer than 150 reviews — meaning most diners walking past them have no idea what's inside. These are the venues our score surfaces first, months before they become household names:
| Restaurant | Rank | Reviews | Rating | Cuisine |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| VIERUNDDREI | #4 | 97 | ⭐4.7 | Korean BBQ · Schwabing |
| The Xofa | #5 | 147 | ⭐4.8 | Korean Modern · Haidhausen |
| 794 JIDAI | #8 | 129 | ⭐4.8 | Fusion · Maxvorstadt |
| La Mocca | #10 | 85 | ⭐4.9 | BBQ · Neuperlach |
| ANAMESA | #41 | 86 | ⭐4.9 | Mediterranean · Schwabing |
| RESTAURANT TANTRIS DNA | #43 | 145 | ⭐4.8 | Fine Dining · Schwabing |
| "frex" Restaurant & Bar | #44 | 117 | ⭐4.7 | Lehel |
La Mocca stands out even within this list — holding 4.9 stars across just 85 reviews, a combination that almost never survives scrutiny as review counts grow. ANAMESA in Schwabing received an SZ.de feature on July 1st and immediately began converting that coverage into review momentum; it's now at #41 and climbing.
July Press Highlights
The clearest press story of July belonged to Tantris. The Schwabing institution received back-to-back Falstaff features celebrating Eckart Witzigmann's 85th birthday — a timely reminder that Munich's fine dining heritage still commands national attention. ANAMESA's SZ.de feature, by contrast, is the kind of local discovery piece that directly drives new-visitor foot traffic.
- Tantris Falstaff & SZ.de Two Falstaff pieces + SZ.de on Eckart Witzigmann's 85th birthday menu
- ANAMESA SZ.de · 1 July Mediterranean discovery feature — restaurant now at #41 and rising
- THE CLOUD by Käfer Falstaff · 8 July Second season launch covered by Falstaff
- Augustiner-Keller SZ.de & Abendzeitung · July Reopening and jüdisch-bayerische Stammtisch launch — +303 reviews in July
- Madam Chutney Mit Vergnügen · 18 July Indian street food feature — +149 reviews in July, moving up the rankings
- MOSTROS Mit Vergnügen · July (×2) Two features, yet the restaurant fell 194 positions — press without review conversion
- Münchner Stubn / Flößerstadl Falstaff, Merkur, TZ · July Oktoberfest operator change — widely covered across Munich media
District Watch: Haidhausen Leads on Quality
For the first time, Haidhausen claims the highest average Social Buzz Score among Munich's main dining districts — driven by Last Call NYC at #1 and The Xofa at #5. Schwabing still leads on sheer volume, placing more venues in the top 100 than any other area.
Haidhausen's average is pulled up sharply by two outlier performers at the very top of the city. Strip those out and the district's floor is comparable to the others — meaning the neighbourhood's overall dining scene has room to grow. Schwabing's 18 venues in the top 100 remain the most of any district, giving it the broadest representation in Munich's dining elite.
